Dicyclomine is a medication that is used to treat various gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and colitis. It works by relaxing the muscles in the digestive tract, thereby reducing abdominal cramps and discomfort.
The chemical structure of dicyclomine belongs to a class of compounds called anticholinergics. It acts by blocking the binding of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine to its muscarinic receptors in the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract. This leads to the relaxation of the smooth muscles and the reduction of spasms and cramps.
Dicyclomine is typically administered orally in the form of tablets or capsules, with a recommended dosage of 20 mg, three to four times a day, before meals. The medication is rapidly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and reaches peak plasma concentration within an hour of ingestion.
The elimination half-life of dicyclomine is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, and it is primarily metabolized in the liver and excreted in the urine. The medication should be used with caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment, as well as in elderly patients, who may be more susceptible to the medication's side effects.
Common side effects of dicyclomine include dry mouth, blurred vision, dizziness, and constipation. In rare cases, it may also cause serious adverse effects such as an allergic reaction, glaucoma, or urinary retention. Therefore, patients should always consult their healthcare provider before taking this medication.
