Intermediates and building blocks

Deuterated Intermediates

Labelled intermediates for API synthesis, route development, medicinal chemistry and other molecule-specific research programs.

Definition

What is a deuterated intermediate?

A deuterated intermediate is a synthetic precursor with deuterium incorporated at a defined or characterized position. It may be used to carry an isotope label through a later API route, prepare an analytical material, investigate reaction behaviour or give medicinal-chemistry teams access to a labelled building block.

Applications

Where labelled intermediates are used

API synthesis

A labelled precursor can introduce deuterium before later bond-forming, protection, deprotection or salt-formation steps.

Medicinal chemistry

Defined building blocks allow analogue preparation and site-specific isotope studies without redesigning an entire route.

Drug metabolism research

Labelled intermediates can support preparation of metabolites, tracers and compounds used in ADME investigations.

Analytical standards

Suitable intermediates may support the synthesis of stable-isotope-labelled internal standards and related materials.

Route development

Alternative points of isotope introduction can be compared for yield, enrichment, selectivity, cost and scalability.

Custom requirements

Unlisted structures can be reviewed for feasibility, target enrichment, quantity, purity and documentation.

Route considerations

Select the intermediate around the final route

The shortest labelled route is not always the most reliable route. Selection should account for where deuterium is introduced, whether later steps may exchange it, how the intermediate is isolated and how much material the downstream program needs.

  • Positional selectivity and isotope-retention risk
  • Chemical yield and isotopic enrichment
  • Raw-material availability and deuterium-source efficiency
  • Protection, purification and solid-form behaviour
  • Process safety and equipment fit at the target scale
Supply route

Catalogue supply and custom synthesis

The right supply route depends on the target, quantity and programme stage. A catalogue item may meet an immediate research need; a custom intermediate may require route scouting and analytical definition before scale-up.

1

Define the target

Structure, isotope position, enrichment, chemical purity, quantity and intended downstream use.

2

Review feasibility

Known chemistry, isotope source, exchange risk, analytical approach and likely isolation route.

3

Confirm supply

Agreed route, release data, storage, documentation, packaging and delivery plan.
