Tigecycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that belongs to the class of glycylcyclines. It is used to treat complicated infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics. Tigecycline works by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria, ultimately leading to their death. Tigecycline is used to treat a variety of infections, including complicated skin and skin structure infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections, and community-acquired pneumonia. It is also effective against some strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE).
