24-Epi-Calcipotriol usage and description
24-Epi-Calcipotriol is a synthetic derivative of Vitamin D3 and acts as an analog of calcitriol. It is primarily used in the treatment of psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune skin disorder. The compound works by binding to Vitamin D receptors on skin cells, thereby regulating the growth and differentiation of these cells.
Research studies have shown that 24-Epi-Calcipotriol has similar efficacy to calcipotriol, a widely used topical medication for psoriasis. However, unlike calcipotriol, 24-Epi-Calcipotriol has a lower risk of inducing hypercalcemia, a condition characterized by elevated levels of calcium in the blood.
Chemically, 24-Epi-Calcipotriol is a highly lipophilic compound with a molecular weight of 412.68 g/mol. Its chemical formula is C27H40O3, and its systematic name is (1R,3S,5Z)-5-{2-[(1R,3aS,7aR)-1-[(2R)-6-hydroxy-6-methylheptan-2-yl]-7a-methyl-2,3,3a,5,6,7-hexahydro-1H-inden-4-ylidene]ethylidene}-4-methylene-cyclohexane-1,3-diol.
In summary, 24-Epi-Calcipotriol is a promising therapeutic agent for the management of psoriasis due to its potent activity and low risk of adverse effects. However, further clinical trials are needed to establish its safety and efficacy in larger patient populations.
