5-Acetylsalicylamide usage and description
5-Acetylsalicylamide, also known as N-Acetylsalicylamide or acetanilide, is a white crystalline solid with a molecular formula of C9H9NO2. It is commonly used as an analgesic and antipyretic medication for the relief of mild to moderate pain and fever. It works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, which are responsible for causing inflammation and pain in the body.
Chemically, 5-Acetylsalicylamide is an amide derivative of salicylic acid. It is synthesized by acetylating the amino group of aniline with acetic anhydride. The resulting product is then purified by recrystallization to obtain the pure compound.
5-Acetylsalicylamide has a melting point of 114-116ยฐC and is slightly soluble in water, but soluble in most organic solvents. It is stable under normal conditions, but decomposes at high temperatures and in the presence of strong acids or bases.
Although 5-Acetylsalicylamide is structurally similar to aspirin, it is not commonly used as a pharmaceutical drug due to the risk of toxicity and side effects. Overdose of acetanilide can cause methemoglobinemia, a blood disorder that reduces the amount of oxygen that can be carried by the blood.
