Butylhydroxyanisole O-Desmethyl Impurity usage and description
Butylhydroxyanisole (BHA) is a common food additive used as a preservative to prevent the spoilage of fats and oils. During the manufacturing process of BHA, a small amount of an impurity called O-Desmethyl BHA is produced. This impurity is a derivative of BHA and is also used as a food additive.
O-Desmethyl BHA is typically used as a substitute for BHA when a milder preservative effect is desired. It is commonly used in the preservation of snack foods, baked goods, and chewing gum. It is also used in the production of plastic and rubber products to prevent oxidation and degradation.
Chemically, O-Desmethyl BHA is very similar to BHA. It is a white or off-white crystalline powder that is soluble in alcohol, acetone, and ether. It has a melting point of 90-95ยฐC and a boiling point of 280ยฐC. The molecular formula for O-Desmethyl BHA is C11H14O2, and its molecular weight is 178.23 g/mol.
Like BHA, O-Desmethyl BHA is considered safe for consumption by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is generally recognized as safe (GRAS). However, some studies have suggested that it may have potential carcinogenic effects in animals, leading to concerns about its safety in humans. As a result, the use of O-Desmethyl BHA as a food additive is closely monitored and restricted in some countries.
