Primaquine-13C,d3 usage and description
Primaquine is a medication used primarily in the treatment and prevention of malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale. It is also used in the treatment of pneumocystis pneumonia, a fungal infection in the lungs. Primaquine 13CD3 is an isotopically labeled form of the drug that is used in metabolic and pharmacokinetic studies.
The chemical formula of Primaquine is C15H21N3O and it belongs to the class of 8-aminoquinoline derivatives. It works by interfering with the DNA synthesis of the malarial parasite and preventing its replication. Primaquine is metabolized in the liver and excreted in the urine, with a half-life of 6-8 hours.
Primaquine 13CD3 is a stable isotopic labeled compound that is used in pharmacokinetic studies to trace the pathway of the drug in the body. It is also used in metabolic studies to determine the metabolic fate of the drug and its metabolites. The use of 13C isotopes allows for accurate measurements of drug concentrations in biological samples.
Primaquine is generally well tolerated, but it can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headache, and abdominal pain. It can also cause hemolytic anemia in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. Primaquine 13CD3 is not intended for use as a medication, but rather as a research tool.
