Baloxavir-D5 usage and description
Baloxavir-D5 is a synthetic drug that is used in the treatment of influenza A and B virus infections. It is a derivative of baloxavir marboxil, which is a prodrug that is converted to baloxavir inside the body. Baloxavir-D5 is a deuterated form of baloxavir, which means that it has five of its hydrogen atoms replaced with deuterium atoms. This modification enhances the drug's pharmacokinetic properties and makes it more effective in treating influenza infections.
Baloxavir-D5 works by inhibiting the cap-dependent endonuclease activity of the influenza virus, which is essential for viral replication. This mechanism of action is unique compared to other antiviral drugs such as oseltamivir and zanamivir, which target the neuraminidase enzyme. Baloxavir-D5 has shown to be effective in reducing the duration of influenza symptoms, and it is approved for use in adults and children aged 12 years and older.
In terms of chemical information, baloxavir-D5 has a molecular formula of C18D5F3N4O3 and a molecular weight of 424.47 g/mol. It is a white to off-white powder that is soluble in water, methanol, and ethanol. Baloxavir-D5 is metabolized in the liver and excreted in the urine and feces. It has a half-life of approximately 79 hours, which means that it can be administered as a single dose. However, it is important to note that baloxavir-D5 should only be used for the treatment of influenza infections and not for the prevention of influenza.
