9-Oxofolic Acid usage and description
9-Oxofolic acid, also known as 10-formyl folic acid, is a derivative of folic acid, a B-vitamin essential for various biological processes in the body, including DNA synthesis, cell division, and protein metabolism. 9-Oxofolic acid is an intermediate in the formation of tetrahydrofolic acid, the active form of folic acid, and plays a crucial role in the folate metabolic pathway.
In terms of usage, 9-Oxofolic acid is commonly used as a starting material for the synthesis of various folic acid derivatives, including methotrexate, an anticancer drug that inhibits the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase. It is also used in the production of diagnostic agents for medical imaging, such as radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography (PET) scans.
Chemically, 9-Oxofolic acid is a yellowish-orange crystalline powder that is soluble in water and ethanol. Its molecular formula is C20H18N7O6 and its molecular weight is 454.4 g/mol. It has a pKa value of 3.3 and a melting point of 247-249 ยฐC.
In conclusion, while 9-Oxofolic acid may not be commonly known or used, it plays a significant role in the synthesis of various folic acid derivatives and medical imaging agents. Its chemical properties and functions contribute to the understanding and development of treatments for cancer and other medical conditions.
