rac-11-epi-Misoprostol usage and description
Rac-11-epi-Misoprostol is a synthetic analogue of prostaglandin E1 used in the treatment of various medical conditions such as gastric ulcers and induction of labor. The drug is a racemic mixture of two enantiomers, namely R-11-epi-Misoprostol and S-11-epi-Misoprostol. The drug works by binding to the prostaglandin receptors in the stomach and uterus, which leads to an increase in mucus production and decrease in acid secretion, ultimately resulting in the healing of gastric ulcers and induction of labor.
Chemically, Rac-11-epi-Misoprostol is a white to off-white crystalline solid with a molecular formula of C22H38O5 and a molecular weight of 382.5 g/mol. The drug is soluble in methanol and ethanol, but insoluble in water. Rac-11-epi-Misoprostol is available in various dosage forms, including tablets, injectables, and vaginal inserts.
Rac-11-epi-Misoprostol should be used under medical supervision, as it can cause adverse effects such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The drug is contraindicated in patients with a history of allergy to prostaglandins or any of its components. It should also be used with caution in patients with a history of kidney or liver disease.
In conclusion, Rac-11-epi-Misoprostol is an effective drug used in the treatment of gastric ulcers and induction of labor. However, it should only be used under medical supervision and with caution in patients with a history of allergy or underlying medical conditions.
